Buy for battery life in GPS mode first, accuracy under tree cover second, and everything else a long way behind. Your longest planned day sets the floor: the watch has to record it from start to finish with margin, at the settings you actually want. Most trail runners overbuy here, paying flagship money for maps and metrics they open twice and then ignore.
Battery in GPS mode is the one trail-specific spec
Smartwatch battery figures (the "up to 14 days" number) describe the watch sitting on your wrist doing nothing. What matters is runtime with GPS recording, which is far shorter. Take your longest event or training day, add a buffer for going slower than planned, and treat that as the minimum.
Two things quietly eat that budget. Higher-accuracy GNSS modes cost battery, so the advertised figure often assumes the least accurate mode. And a lit screen costs power every time you look at it, which on a night section is constantly. For a 50K, roughly 20 hours of GPS runtime is comfortable. For 100 miles you want 40 hours or more, or a watch that charges from a power bank stashed in your vest while you run.
There is also a free option: most watches offer a battery-saver mode that fixes your position less often. It costs some accuracy on switchbacks and trims recorded distance slightly, but it can nearly double runtime. Knowing that mode exists is cheaper than buying the bigger watch.

Multi-band GNSS, and where accuracy actually breaks
Satellite positioning fails in predictable places: dense tree cover, narrow canyons, cliff bands, anywhere the sky is half blocked. The signal reflects off rock and wet foliage, the watch receives the bounce as well as the direct path, and your track ends up wandering across a river you never crossed. That is why your ascent total looks absurd after a forest run.
Multi-band (dual-frequency) receivers listen on two frequencies at once, which lets the watch reject much of that reflected signal. This is the one place where newer technology genuinely delivers on trails, and it matters more than any training metric. If your local running is open moorland, single-band is fine. If it is steep forest or slot canyons, multi-band is the upgrade to pay for.
Multi-band costs battery, so most watches offer it as a mode you switch on. Sensible habit: multi-band for races and technical routes, standard mode for daily miles.
Maps: full topo, breadcrumb, or neither
There are three tiers. A breadcrumb watch draws your route as a line with no surrounding detail, so you can see you have drifted off but not what is around you. A full offline topographic map shows trails, contours and junctions whether or not you loaded a route. Between them sit watches storing simplified map data.
Be honest about which you need. On a marked race, a breadcrumb plus the course file is plenty: you follow ribbons, and the watch is a backstop when you have not seen one for a while. Full maps earn their price when you invent routes, explore unfamiliar mountains, or need to bail early down a different line. That is a real need for some runners and an imagined one for many.
Whichever you buy, load the course beforehand and know how to restart navigation mid-activity after a wrong turn. A watch that beeps "off course" only helps if you can then work out where the course is. Practise that on a training run, not at 3 a.m. in an event.

Screen type and the battery trade-off
AMOLED screens are bright, high contrast and easy to read at night or under a hood. They are lit displays, so they draw power whenever they are on, which is why AMOLED watches lean on gesture or button activation rather than staying awake.
MIP screens are the older transflective type: dull indoors, always visible, and superb in direct sun, the condition that washes other screens out. They sip power, so a MIP watch usually posts longer GPS runtimes than an equivalent AMOLED.
Neither is wrong. For daily wear and shorter races, AMOLED is more pleasant. For 100 mile efforts where you glance at the screen hundreds of times, MIP still has an argument, and always-on means you never fumble a wrist flick with poles in your hands.
Training metrics: some signal, a lot of noise
Modern watches produce recovery times, readiness scores, training load and predicted race times. The underlying data (duration, pace, heart rate, elevation) is real. The scores built on top are models, and those models assume road-like conditions.
On trails, pace says almost nothing about effort, so anything derived from it degrades on steep or technical ground. Grade-adjusted pace helps but is still an approximation. Treat the numbers as trends, not instructions: a readiness score that drops three days running means something, one bad night's score does not.
Heart rate: wrist versus chest strap
Wrist optical sensors read blood flow through the skin, and they struggle with what trail running involves: cold hands, a loose strap, gripping poles, and sharp effort changes at the foot of a climb. The classic failure is cadence lock, where the sensor latches onto your arm swing and reports a heart rate matching your steps.
If you train by heart rate, use a chest strap. It responds faster and does not care about temperature. Wrist sensors are perfectly adequate for all-day trend data and sleep, and most watches pair with a strap when it matters, so you do not need to choose one forever.
Durability, comfort and lock-in
Sapphire glass resists scratches from rock and gate posts but adds weight and cost; plain mineral glass scratches more easily and survives impact fine. The band matters more over a long day: silicone traps sweat and softens skin over 24 hours, while nylon or woven bands breathe and dry.
Then there is the ecosystem. Your training history, the phone app, the route builder and the services that read your data all live inside one brand, so switching later means exporting everything or accepting a broken history. Check that your watch exports cleanly to whatever platform you and your coach actually use.

Before buying, write down your longest run of the past year and your longest planned event. If neither is over six hours, battery life is not your constraint and you can spend the money on fit, screen and comfort instead.
Common mistakes
Overbuying. Flagship mountain watches are designed for multi-day efforts in terrain most people never enter. If you race up to 50K on marked courses, a mid-tier watch does everything you need and weighs less.
Buying maps instead of learning navigation. A map on a two-inch screen does not replace knowing where you are. Carry a phone with an offline map as a backup and understand the route before you start.
Chasing accuracy you cannot use. A track two metres tighter does not make you fitter. Multi-band matters because it stops gross errors under canopy, not because it perfects a segment time.

Take your slowest realistic finish time for the longest event you plan in the next two years, then add half again. For a 50K that lands around 12 to 15 hours, which almost any current watch covers. Do I need full offline maps?
