Spend the least you can on a bike that is the right type and the right size. The bottom of the market is where money changes the most
Below a certain price a bike is heavy in the places that matter, stops badly in the wet and needs adjusting every few weeks by somebody who does not know how. Where the returns start to diminish
Around the middle of any range, components stop being about function and start being about grams and polish. Frames get lighter through more expensive tubing or layup rather than better geometry, groupsets shift a fraction more crisply rather than more reliably, and suspension gains adjustments most riders never learn to use.
Mountain bikes are the exception worth naming. An undamped coil fork is weight pretending to be suspension, an air fork with a real damper is a different machine, and above that better damping keeps the wheel on the ground through repeated hits. Wheels and tyres change a bike most per pound
Tyres are the cheapest meaningful upgrade in cycling and the one most riders never make. They set grip, comfort, rolling resistance and puncture resistance, and factory tyres are often the cheapest part on the bike because nobody compares them in a showroom. A supple tyre in the right width at the right pressure transforms how a bike rides for a fraction of what a frame upgrade costs.
Wheels come next, because they are rotating weight, so a lighter pair changes acceleration more than the same weight saved from the frame, and a well-built wheel stays true instead of wobbling every few months. With a fixed sum to improve a bike you own: tyres first, wheels second, contact points third. Frame material is not on the list.
The costs people forget
The bike is not the purchase. Budget from the start for a helmet that fits, lights front and rear, a lock if the bike is ever out of sight, a floor pump with a gauge, a spare tube and levers, and pedals, since road and many mountain bikes are sold without them. Buying used
Depreciation is steep, and steepest in the first year or two. That is the used buyer's advantage: the same money often buys a bike a category above what it buys new, from an owner who kept it indoors. The cost is an unknown history, so the skill is turning unknown into known before you pay.
Where to buy
Shop trade-ins and ex-demo bikes are safest, since they have been checked and sometimes carry a warranty. Dedicated used-bike marketplaces sit in the middle, with some verification and a payment system. General classifieds are cheapest and riskiest. Club noticeboards and forums are quietly the best of the lot, because the seller is identifiable and has a reputation to keep.
How to check it
- Frame. Check every weld, especially around the head tube, the bottom bracket and where the seat stays meet the seat tube. Paint that is crazed, rippled or bubbling in one spot deserves a question. On carbon, run your hands over the whole frame feeling for soft spots, ridges or dents, and look hard at the down tube behind the front wheel and at the chainstays, where impacts land.
- Drivetrain. A chain checker is small, cheap and settles chain wear in seconds, and a worn chain takes the cassette and chainrings with it. Look for a hooked, shark-fin shape on the teeth.
- Wheels. Spin each one and watch the gap between rim and frame or brake pad. A small wobble is a truing job, a large one can mean a bent rim or broken spokes. Squeeze pairs of spokes for even tension, and check rims for cracks around the spoke holes.
- Suspension. Ask when the fork and shock were last serviced and expect a real answer. Look for oil weeping at the seals and scratches on the stanchions, then push the bike down and feel whether it returns under control or springs back like a pogo stick.
- Fork and headset play. Hold the front brake and rock the bike back and forth. A knock means a loose or worn headset. Wiggle each wheel sideways for hub play, and spin the pedals backwards listening for a rough bottom bracket.
Then ride it, up something steep and down something that needs hard braking. If this feels beyond you, take somebody who rides, or pay a shop for a pre-purchase check.
Making sure it is not stolen
Find the frame number, usually stamped under the bottom bracket, and check it against the national stolen-bike registers before you pay. Ask for the original receipt and treat its absence as a reason to negotiate hard or walk away. Buy from a home address rather than a car park, ask where the bike was bought and why it is going, and notice if it is obviously the wrong size for the seller.

Work backwards from the current price of the equivalent new bike, not from what the seller paid. Take off a large chunk for the first couple of years of age, then subtract what it needs immediately: chain and cassette, tyres, pads, a suspension service, a workshop check.
