Glasses and gloves are protective equipment that happen to look like accessories. Glasses keep grit, insects, spray and low branches out of eyes moving at speed; gloves put fabric between the heel of your hand and the road when you go down. Why glasses are safety kit

At speed your eyes meet everything the wheel in front throws up: grit off a dry road, spray off a wet one, a bee on a descent, a twig on singletrack. Any of them makes you flinch, and flinching in a group or on a descent is how a small problem becomes a crash. Wind dries your eyes on long descents, and low winter sun straight down the road can hide a pothole. Lens material, coverage and fit

Polycarbonate is the standard lens material for a good reason: it resists shattering, which is what you want in front of an eye. Cheap lenses distort toward the edges, so look through the outer part before buying, not the middle.

Coverage separates cycling glasses from fashion sunglasses. Your head is low and tilted forward on a bike, so you look out through the top of the lens. A tall wraparound shape covers the eye from above and from the side, where debris arrives. Small square lenses leave a gap where you need glass.

Fit has one cycling-specific requirement: the arms must work with the straps on your helmet, so try them on together. Thin, straight arms sit over or under the strap without pressure; thick or curved arms fight it and leave a sore spot behind the ear. A pair that slides when you sweat is a pair you stop wearing.

Tints, photochromic lenses, fogging

Fixed tints are cheap and optically excellent, each covering a narrow range of conditions. Fogging is a ventilation problem, not a lens problem. Lenses mist when you slow and stop moving air across them, so it happens on climbs and at lights, not at speed. Vented lens tops, a brow gap and anti-fog coatings help, as does parking the glasses on your helmet.

Gloves: the real reason is your palms

When you fall off a bike your hands go out. The heel of the palm lands first, it slides, and the road takes the skin off. That injury heals slowly, is awkward to dress, and stops you using the hand for anything. A glove means fabric slides instead of skin, on a commute as much as a race.

Everything else is comfort: sweat absorption, less buzz, something to wipe a wet lens with. Useful, not the reason to own them.

Padding and numbness

Padding is the most oversold feature here. A thin layer of gel or foam takes the edge off vibration. Beyond that, thick padding does not fix numb hands, it causes them: bulk under the palm raises pressure on the ulnar nerve at the base of the hand, and thick gloves make you grip harder to feel the bars.

Persistent numbness or tingling in the ring and little fingers is a fit and position problem, not a padding shortfall. Usual causes: too much weight on the hands from a saddle too high or nosed down, bars too low or far away, a poor hood angle, locked elbows. Move your hands often, and if the numbness outlasts the ride, get the position looked at rather than buying thicker gloves.

Short finger or full finger

Short finger gloves are the warm-weather road default: cool, quick to remove, and they still protect the palm. Full finger adds abrasion cover for fingers, knuckles and the backs of the hands. Off road, brush and bar impacts land on the fingers, so full finger is the default on trails whatever the temperature.

Sizing for both: snug, with no bunched fabric across the palm, since a wrinkle under a load-bearing part of the hand becomes a hot spot. Palms wear out long before the rest of the glove, and a worn palm is not doing its one job.

  • Owning only dark lenses. Half the year, rides start or finish in low light.
  • Buying glasses without the helmet. Strap and arm conflict shows only when both are on.

Are cheap cycling glasses good enough?

Often, yes. Polycarbonate lenses with decent coverage protect your eyes at almost any price, and cheap sets often include interchangeable lenses covering more conditions than one premium pair. More money buys edge clarity, coatings and a fit that stays put. Edge distortion is the flaw worth rejecting.

Do I need gloves on an upright bike?

The crash argument does not change with riding position: your hands still go out. Upright riding puts less weight through the palms, so you need less padding, not less protection.

What if I wear a prescription?

Three routes work: contacts under normal cycling glasses, a frame with a prescription insert behind the lens, or a direct-glazed cycling frame. Inserts keep proper coverage cheaply, though they fog more readily. Ordinary prescription glasses leave the top and sides open.
